Specialist in Healthcare Architecture: focusing on human needs

Volantis realises new buildings, processes and production facilities, and also innovates existing ones. Although we are active in various types of industry, we mainly focus on the manufacturing industry and the healthcare industry. Our architects hold unique views. We place a premium on innovation, comfort, building safety, well-being and sustainability. In this way, we make processes and buildings used in the manufacturing industry, healthcare industry and education sector smarter, more efficient and more sustainable.

Considering the needs of wishes and needs of residents

Being specialists in healthcare facilities, our architects will create the perfect ambiance for both residents and healthcare professionals. Volantis’ buildings are designed to work for the people who live and work in them, down to the most insignificant detail. When we design buildings, we take into account various types of impairment (e.g. physical and mental impairment). We design buildings in which residents feel good and are able to lead happy lives. Do the residents need more rest? Or do they actually need more stimuli? Are there efficient pathways for your employees? Is there enough room for an assistant on either side of a resident? Volantis’ architects contribute ideas, based on the wishes and requirements expressed by your residents, and serve as a professional conversation partner in matters relating to the provision of care services.

Our views on design for healthcare facilities have been proven to be successful. There is a reason why we were among the first architects to design small-scale living facilities. We also pioneered the ‘butterfly concept’. Just like butterflies are attracted to the scent and colour of flowers in their surroundings, so there are various types of ambiance in this living concept. Residents will find whatever section of the building they feel most comfortable in at any given moment. Our knowledge of, and expertise in, supportive living facilities has resulted in an impressive portfolio of healthcare projects.

Healthcare facility architects with a integrated approach

Residential units and workspaces must be created in one and the same building, where the one must not rule out the other. Volantis’ healthcare facility architects are so experienced that they are perfectly able to strike the right balance. And so we start every project by listening to our clients. Tell us about your wishes, ideas and requirements. We will listen to you and convert your ideas into sustainable architectural principles. Who are the people living in your building? What are their needs and wishes? Being specialists in healthcare facilities, our architects will create the perfect ambiance for both residents and healthcare professionals.

‘All architects can design buildings. The trick is to create buildings that allow residents AND healthcare professionals to thrive.’

A healthy building will make people healthier

The buildings realised by Volantis do not only improve functionality and liveability, but also improve residents’ and staff’s sense of well-being and their health. Volantis creates comfortable and healthy buildings, in which your employees will feel good and perform better.

One great example of this is Domi Curae, a construction concept designed by Willems Bouwbedrijf and the architects of the Volantis Groep. This is an innovative turn-key construction project for organisations that provide intramural care – constant in-patient care – to elderly people. They are ambiance-based healthcare facilities that can be built in a sustainable manner in a brief amount of time and at a reduced budget, but still boast great quality. Studies have shown that ambiance-based and practical benefits for residents and nursing staff are converted into great results:

  • Staff sickness absence was 2 to 3 per cent lower than the national average.
  • Residents’ medicine use decreased by 30 per cent.
  • A whopping 85 per cent fewer disputes were reported.

Our architects will be happy to tell you more about this unique care concept.

We can achieve these objectives because of our holistic approach. We listen to and observe our client, and arrive at a good design in consultation with them. We make the best possible use of rooms, while always focusing on people’s comfort. For instance, we make sure that there are multiple common rooms which provide different types of stimuli, rather than creating just the one large living room where all residents hang out together. Residents’ well-being is improved by these and other nuances. Volantis and more specifically our healthcare facility architects are not happy unless the building’s users are happy.

When our architects design healthcare facilities, one of their main focus areas is recycling materials. Applying circular economy principles to our construction projects is second nature to Volantis’ architects. We have put these principles to the test since 2012, when we constructed the greenest office in the Netherlands: Villa Flora. We consider future usages of spaces and materials, so that we can realise buildings that will still retain their value many years after the fact. Circular economy in the construction industry means that we can disassemble reusable materials and use them again in a new building, where they can serve as building blocks for a new project. In this way, we seek to create a world without waste. Reuse of materials, and designing energy-efficient and even energy-neutral buildings – to Volantis, this is the future.

"Together with our customers, we create new perspectives, looking to the future."
