New painting line for Rockpanel

Rockpanel (part of the Rockwool Group) specialises in facade cladding. In recent years, it has experienced considerable growth. To serve the demands from the market, it has decided to build a new second paint line at Rockpanel in Roermond. The machines will be installed in mid-2023 and the line should be operational in 2024.
We as Volantis are proud to be part of this.

The plan of action

In order to realise this new painting line, we demolished an existing production hall. In its place we erected a new, larger production hall, which was connected to the existing production halls. In addition, the project required new ventilation and climate control systems, generation and transmission of heating and cooling, and integration of all equipment. Furthermore, special spaces had to be modified, in accordance with applicable rules and regulations. It was vital that allowance be made for potential modifications in the future.

‘Volantis’ complete engineering package and project management’

The role of Volantis

Volantis was involved in all stages of this project, from the first initiative to the actual implementation. In the preliminary phase, Volantis provided the project management as well as the full package of engineering services for the Civil component, including costs, fire safety, mandatory tests and tender documents. Furthermore, Volantis issued recommendations and practical services in relation to the technical component of the procurement phase.

As far as the implementation is concerned, Volantis supported Rockwool’s operations by providing all the construction management, in all disciplines: infrastructure, demolition and disassembly, architectural plans and construction, mechanical engineering and electrotechnical installations, including safety installations. Basically, we served as a ‘client engineer’, and embarked on the design and engineering activities in response to the schedule of requirements and a pre-determined financial framework. All the designs and engineering plans were detailed in a 3D BIM model.

The various stages of the project were as follows:

1. Obtaining the right permits (in parallel to the various stages)
2. Analysing the requirements and determining the guiding principles
3. Schedule of requirements (definitions stage)
4. Draft design and preliminary design
5. Final design
6. Specifications (technical design)
7. Procurement (call for tenders and awarding the tenders to construction partners)
8. Construction management during the implementation phase (demolition, architecture/construction, mechanical and electrical systems, and grounds/infrastructure)
9. Practical completion and aftercare
